Why are volunteers so valuable?
The Oakdale Hose Company is a 100% volunteer fire department. The members do not get paid or reimbursed for there time spent in the organization. Here is some info on how much money volunteers save tax payers.
- A paid fire company with 5 people costs approximately $900,000 per year to operate.
- The Oakdale Hose Company provides 4 fire trucks and over 30 firefighters for free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- All of the members are required to pass the essentials of firefighting provided by the state and county fire academies. 98% of our members are Basic Vehicle Rescue Technicians Certified by the PA Dept. of Health. We also have 12 EMT’s to provide QRS.
- Our members also spend thousands of hours a year keeping there firefighting and rescue knowledge up to date.
It’s Important to know that there is no tax in Oakdale that provides money to the fire department. We depend on fund raisers, donations and the subsidy we get from the borough and township of North Fayette. If we were to close, your taxes may or may not increase. However, your insurance costs would at least double!
